David Hudson
After a remarkable career defined by leadership, vision, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, David Hudson is announcing his retirement, leaving behind a legacy that has significantly shaped the built environment in Chattanooga and beyond.
A proud graduate of Auburn University, Mr. Hudson’s influence is both lasting and deeply felt. His work helped define the trajectory of downtown Chattanooga’s revival through pioneering projects such as the Bread Factory, Chattanooga’s first true loft apartments, and Walnut Commons, the city’s first market-rate urban housing development in more than two decades.
He also played a key role in transformative projects like the Loveman’s building renovation.
Mr. Hudson’s portfolio spans education, healthcare, and commercial design. Notable projects include the Chattanooga State Health Sciences Building, East Lake Elementary, East Hamilton Middle High School, the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee office building in Johnson City, Chattanooga Prep, and The Partnerships in Industry and Education (PIE) Innovation Center. Nationally, his leadership drove large-scale initiatives such as Drive Shack developments and the expansion of 125 Food Lion locations within a two-year period.
Beyond his extensive project work, Mr. Hudson’s legacy is defined by his leadership and the culture he helped build. As co-founder of Artech Design Group and a guiding force behind its merger with Tinker Ma, he fostered an environment rooted in creativity, collaboration, and accountability, often summarized by his guiding principle: “Do good work.”
Mr. Hudson was known for his authentic leadership style and commitment to mentorship. His open-door approach encouraged collaboration and growth, while his dedication to client success set a high standard across every project. He consistently invested in both people and process, elevating the work and those around him.
His impact extends well beyond the firm. Mr. Hudson has been actively involved in professional and civic organizations, including early engagement with the American Institute of Architects (AIA), as well as service on nonprofit and community boards. He also shared his passion for architecture by teaching high school students and mentoring emerging professionals. As he enters retirement, Mr. Hudson looks forward to spending more time with his family, as well as enjoying golf and fly fishing.
“David is the kind of leader who makes you want to rally behind him,” said Terry Skwierc, senior design professional. “His enthusiasm for the profession and his genuine care for clients had a way of shaping your own perspective for the better.”
