The world's eyes will be on Royal Birkdale as The 154th Open gets underway

People from all over the world are heading to one part of Merseyside this week. The 154th Open Championship has arrived at Royal Birkdale Golf Club, with superstars of the sport teeing off for their first round on Thursday (July 16).

The Open is one of the four major championships in men's golf, alongside the Masters, the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open. Local golfer Tommy Fleetwood, World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, the reigning Open champion, and Northern Irish great Rory McIlroy will be among the big names competing to lift the famous Claret Jug trophy on Sunday.

More than 300,000 spectators are expected to visit Royal Birkdale for the highly anticipated event. The ECHO headed to the course today, Monday (July 13), for one of its practice days and spoke to spectators in and around Royal Birkdale.

Julie Welag, 48, a golf tour operator from Ohio, was joined by her partner Mark Welag, 52, and sons Jason, 20, and Eli, 11, on the train to Royal Birkdale this afternoon.

Julie told the ECHO: “We’re from Ohio so it’s a big trip for us and the boys. We’ve done all the major golf tournaments so this is the last one to tick off the list.

"We arrived like three hours ago so we’re looking forward to spending some time in Liverpool."

Jason Kamler, 51, and his son Henry Kamler, nine, travelled from Wisconsin to attend the event today.

Jason said: "It’s our first time at Birkdale but we’re massive golf fans. We were in Ireland last week and played at Hillside yesterday (Sunday) and are playing at Liverpool tomorrow (Tuesday).

"My wife and family are coming over at the end of the week and we’re going on vacation in Scotland.

"It’s our first time at Birkdale but not my first Open, we went to Portrush last year."

Tom Cavanagh, 32, from Sheffield, was attending the event with his grandparents.

He said: “We’ve had a great time. They’re big into golf so we’ve been here for the past couple of days.

"We’ve come from Sheffield and just done the Sunday and Monday. We’re heading back tomorrow (Tuesday) but it’s been great.”

More information on The 154th Open can be found in the ECHO's dedicated section.
