Block attributes linked to excel data

I have a drawing template block that I would like to link to an excel spreadsheet data. The spreadsheet has all our projects listed sequentially.Each row contains various data fields starting with project number and followed by project name, client, etc. In my drawing template I would like to be able to select a project number and then have the other items (project name, etc) auto-fill, similar to excel vlookup function. Is this possible? The idea is to keep one central source document (excel spreadsheet) and have cad templates link to this data to avoid errors that occur when manually entering data.
