Nicolas Jackson had a solid reason behind his desire to take the Chelsea penalty that caused a row among Blues team-mates on Monday.

Three Chelsea players were embroiled in a physical bust-up before the hosts' fifth goal against Everton at Stamford Bridge, with Noni Madueke and Jackson involved before it was broken up by Conor Gallagher and Malo Gusto.

Cole Palmer took control of the ball and scored his fourth of the game, and afterwards it became clear why Jackson was desperate for the chance to score his second.

Jackson scored his 10th Premier League goal of the campaign with Chelsea's fourth on Monday, taking him to 13 in all competitions.

It means he has equalled the number of league goals scored by Chelsea icon Didier Drogba in his first season with the club - and only three behind the Ivory Coast star's total of 16 in all competitions.

There was a squabble between Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke ahead of a Chelsea spot kick

Conor Gallagher pleaded with his team-mates to leave the ball to Palmer, the designated penalty-taker who eventually took and converted the spot kick

Jackson has set an ambition to score 15 in the league, and 20 goals in all competitions for the Blues before the end of the season next month.

However, his plans to get another on Monday night were halted when he was replaced by Deivid Washington before the final whistle.

Mauricio Pochettino has made it publicly clear that Palmer is Chelsea's designated penalty taker, while Madueke has scored two penalties this term when Palmer was not on the pitch.

Jackson has not taken any penalties so far this season, and is not expected to risk his place in the team or relationship with the Blues' faithful by pushing to take one.

The spat caused more problems for Chelsea after the final whistle, despite the 6-0 scoreline.

Pochettino was visibly incensed at the bizarre confrontation during his post-match press conference, and took exception at being questioned about the spat.

In his press conference, the manager said:  'First of all, I want to tell you to make clear that they know, the players know, the staff know, the club know, that the taker on penalties is Cole Palmer.

'It is a shame. I am so, so upset about this situation. We are talking in the dressing room about the image that we send because this is Monday night football and in every single country they were watching the game.

'We cannot send this type of image. It is a shame and I want to apologise to football people and our fans because that is unacceptable.'

Scoring against Everton means Jackson equalled Didier Drogba for debut season league goals

Pochettino's mood post-match did not feel like that of a manager whose side had won 6-0

Guest Sky pundit Dele Alli said the feuding players were 'showing their age' over the row

He went on to say that both Madueke and Jackson would be 'out' if they acted in a similar manner in the future.

Dele Alli, who was a guest pundit on Sky's Monday Night Football, said the feuding players were 'showing their age' over the row.

Pochettino was also caught in the middle of a row between Chelsea's former stadium announcer and the club's press officer, who was accused of 's*** management of a press conference'.
