Philly officials head to Harrisburg to rally for new school funding

Дата публикации: 22-06-2026 10:37:58

After pledging millions to ensure Philly’s public schools don’t need to cut about 340 jobs, Philadelphia officials are heading to Harrisburg on Monday to encourage state legislators to help the city afford that pledge.
Earlier this month, officials, including Mayor Cherelle Parker, pledged $216 million to the district over the course of five years.
At that time, Parker said City Council already allocated $50 million in funding that will cover Philadelphia schools next year.
According to Parker, they’ve also found ways to provide $50 million annually for the school district over the next five years.
That money will either come from existing funds – including those in the city’s capital budget – and be diverted to Philadelphia schools or it will come from a separate revenue source, according to Parker.
But, just what that separate revenue source would be is still unknown and, with Monday’s effort, officials are looking to get the state to help foot the bill.
In a statement ahead of the afternoon rally for schools in Harrisburg, organizers said city officials will hold a press event in order to “highlight the need for safe, healthy, and modern learning environments and advocate for increased state funding to address aging infrastructure, accessibility improvements, and critical building repairs in Philadelphia schools.”
The rally comes after the School District of Philadelphia approved a $4.6 billion operating budget for the next school year, despite facing a projected deficit of about $300 million.
Along with a multi-billion dollar budget plan, school officials have also voted to shutter 17 schools across the district, as well.
Parker had looked to help raise funds for the city’s school system with a tax on rideshare trips. But, City Council did not hold a vote on that element of Parker’s proposal.
That tax was intended to secure a recurring $50 million a year for the city’s public school system.
And, now, as school officials look to modernize nearly 200 schools over the next decade, they plan to rally in Harrisburg in the hopes of finding funding to get it done.
The rally is scheduled to be held at 1 p.m. outside the state capitol building in Harrisburg.
