Summer has definitely arrived in Manchester. The sun is out, the beer gardens are packed, and there is an unmistakable feeling in the air. When the music scene reaches the height of summer, there is only one place where the true soul of the city's musical heartbeat is found, under the open sky at Castlefield Bowl.

Tonight marks night one of Sounds of the City 2026. Over the next fortnight, the iconic outdoor amphitheatre will play host to the likes of Wet Leg, Johnny Marr, and The Streets. But as the sun dips below the industrial skyline for this opening night, the keys to the city belong entirely to Earlestown’s finest, The K’s.

Hailing from just down the road in Earlestown, the band’s roots mean Manchester has always felt like a second home. But this isn’t another standard slot in the calendar.

Tonight is a celebration of a band who have worked for nine years to get here, backed by an audience that has been on the journey with them for their biggest headline show to date.

When the first chords of Icarus ring out, the Bowl instantly dissolves into a chaotic sea of flying pints and flailing limbs. Followed in rapid succession by Heart on My Sleeve and Gravestone, the pace is absolutely relentless. Even passengers on the trains passing high above the viaducts stop to steal a fleeting peek at the madness down below.

Jamie Boyle’s immaculate vocals, backed by the driving precision of Dexter Baker and Ryan Breslin, have never sounded sharper. It’s immediately clear that tonight is as much a victory lap for the fans as it is for the band themselves.

The acoustic reprieve of Hoping Maybe provides the night's most poignant moment, transforming the massive bowl into something deeply intimate as thousands of voices join in a soulful, emotional singalong. It’s a brief breather before Hometown and Picking Up the Pieces arrive to kick the energy back into overdrive.

To appreciate tonight's scale, you have to look back to where it all started. From their first Manchester gig on the tiny, sweaty stage at the Northern Quarter's Jimmy's in 2017, the four-piece didn't do it the easy way. Instead, they played hundreds of live shows, racking up millions of Spotify streams on the strength of their ferocious live reputation long before a physical album even existed.

When their debut, I Wonder If the World Knows?, finally arrived in April 2024, it went straight to number three on the UK Albums Chart. They followed it up last summer with Pretty on the Internet, which completed their ascent by debuting straight at number one. Tonight, headlining this iconic venue, they keep that relentless momentum rolling with a swagger that feels entirely earned.

The crowd responds with a fevered enthusiasm that only a true homecoming show can produce. A special, soaring performance of Perfect Haunting blends straight into a massive, arena-wide singalong for Valley One, with every single one of the 9,000 in attendance singing back every word. Another fan favourite 2019 single Aurora is followed by a stunning version of Helen Oh I. This is a band at the top of their game and with album number three on the way, even bigger things are to come.

The jagged, frantic energy of Sarajevo eventually arrives to bring the triumphant set to a close, the track that started it all. By the time the final chords ring out across the water, the Bowl is left breathless, coated in a thick layer of sweat and spilled beer.

However, they aren’t quite finished. Giving a final nod to the loyal fans that built them, they launch into Dacton and Wanderella for the ultimate finale to a special evening.

"We'll see you at the Arena next year," Jamie exclaims as the band departs. On tonight's evidence, he won't be wrong.
