Playing a real-life person — especially when they or their close family members are still alive — has to be a tough and risky job for any actor. Unfortunately, sometimes it really does not pay off. Here are some "true story" portrayals that the real people involved actually hated...
1.
Lily James played Pamela Anderson in the series Pam & Tommy, which chronicled the theft and illegal release of Pamela and Tommy Lee's sex tape. Pamela slammed both the show and Lily's portrayal of her, saying the series was "salt on the wound" and its creation was "hurtful."
2.
John Michael Higgins played David Letterman in The Late Shift, which portrayed the host's late-night battle with Jay Leno in the early '90s. "It’s just bizarre," David Letterman told Entertainment Weekly of the movie.
"The guy who's playing me — and I’m sure he’s a fine actor — but his interpretation seems to be that I’m, well, a circus chimp. He looks like he’s insane, like he’s a budding psychopath. And afterward I thought, 'Well, maybe this is how I strike people as being.'"
3.
Kat Graham played Jada Pinkett Smith in All Eyez on Me, a Tupac Shakur biopic that included his close relationship with Jada – much to Jada's displeasure. "The reimagining of my relationship to Pac has been deeply hurtful," Jada said on X, pointing out the inaccuracies in a series of posts.
"Forgive me... My relationship to Pac is too precious to me for the scenes in All Eyez on Me to stand as truth," she added, before saying that it was "no fault" of Kat Graham's, and that she and costar Demetrius Shipp Jr. "did a beautiful job with what you were given."
4.
Lil' Kim was played by Naturi Naughton in the Notorious B.I.G. biopic Notorious. Kim was apparently offended that Naturi never reached out to her and was disappointed in her casting.
She also criticized the movie as a whole, saying "most of the story is bullshit" — although the filmmakers pushed back, arguing Kim had only seen an old version of the script.
5.
Hilary Duff played Sharon Tate in The Haunting of Sharon Tate, a movie which essentially turned the real-life murder of Sharon into a slasher. While Sharon couldn't speak for herself, her sister, Debra Tate, expressed disgust at not just Hilary playing Sharon, but the movie as a whole.
"Tacky, tacky, tacky," Debra told People, adding that the movie depicting Sharon having a premonition about her death was "a total fabrication."
6.
Zoe Saldana played Nina Simone in the biopic Nina, and the late singer's family expressed their displeasure with both the movie and Zoe, who darkened her skin with makeup and wore a prosthetic nose for the role. Nina's daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly, said of Zoe's casting, "My mother was raised at a time when she was told her nose was too wide, her skin was too dark. Appearance-wise, this is not the best choice."
The official X account of Nina Simone's estate later directly tagged Zoe, saying "please take Nina's name out your mouth. For the rest of your life."
7.
The real Patch Adams, who was the inspiration for the movie Patch Adams, in which Robin Williams played him, criticized the way the movie didn't highlight his activism and reduced his character to "funny doctor," adding that "it made my children cry."
He did clarify that he had nothing against Robin Williams personally and that he did a "fabulous job."
8.
Rose Byrne played feminist activist Gloria Steinem in the series Mrs. America, and while Gloria said, "I'm sure the actors in it are fine," she was critical of the show's portrayal of her and the real-life events she experienced.
She called it "ridiculous" and "not very good," adding, "The series makes it seem as if women are our own worst enemies, which keeps us from recognizing who our worst enemies are."
9.
Julia Garner played convicted con artist Anna Delvey in the series Inventing Anna, and met with the real Anna to prepare for the role. Anna initially expressed that she wasn't interested in watching the show, but after it came out she said that while Julia was "very sweet," she'd done "a little too much" with her accent.
Anna rated Julia's work, and particularly her accent, a "6 out of 10."
10.
Meanwhile, one of Anna Delvey's victims, Rachel DeLoache Williams, was played by Katie Lowes in Inventing Anna, and she wasn't happy with the actor or the series as a whole. "I never heard from her," Rachel said of Katie. "From what I’ve seen of the series so far: Lowes's concern for accuracy, when it comes to portraying me as I am, seems limited to the spelling of my full name."
"This sort of half-truth is more insidious than a total lie because it causes uninformed viewers to mistake fiction for fact based on mere fragments of reality," Rachel added, saying the show had created a "false narrative" about her.
11.
Finally, Tom Hiddleston played country singer Hank Williams in I See the Light. While Hank died in 1953, his grandson, Hank Williams III, spoke out against the movie, saying he wanted a "better director" and for his grandfather's story to be done "halfway right."
He added, "I don't know what is going on with [Tom] impersonating Hank Williams... it seems they are trying to launch someone's music career, not making a movie."
