Not having read the books, I take a lot of this stuff based on the entertainment value of it. That's mostly because there are damn few movies that are true to the story of the books itself. It's also in part because I have a mental image of what was described in the narrative of the book, and don't really recognize it in the movies most of the time if one of those books makes it to the big screen.

Almost everything in motion pictures is a reflection of the director/producer's vision rather than the author of the story's, after all. So it's not a huge surprise.

But it can be a huge disappointment.

And then you get the fans of the books decrying the deets of the movie (hello Harry Potter!) and those like me who never read the books seeing that worlds through the director/producer's eyes.

Dune movies - all iterations of them - have been different versions of the books. So naturally, there's the book believers, and the movie believers. And what I hear from both is kind of "meh" overall.

I saw the first Dune movie and decided it was trying too hard, didn't do too good at relaying those thoughts and just didn't think too much about it. I THOUGHT the parts I was missing would be something the fans would love. But that turned out not to be the case.

And a MAJOR nitpick, from a physiological point of view, if you have a still-suit on that doesn't completely cover your head and recycle that moisture, you're going to die of dehydration in a day or two if you don't have adequate extra water. The head is exceptionally vascular, and it sweats a LOT. You also lose far more moisture through your mouth breathing out than you do through your nose, making the whole nose attachment look ridiculous.

But the most glaring issue was how do you lose heat? Humans do that by sweating. The still-suit from what I gather only takes your sweat and converts it back into something you can drink. I don't see any way for it to expel heat. So, if you don't sweat and that sweat evaporates to cool you, you fry, boiling in your own juices. That would be a heat stroke in pretty much no time at all. They didn't even make them white, to reduce the amount of solar energy they'd absorb as heat.

Still-suits as depicted in the Dune movies will kill you in a (presumably hot) desert in mere minutes. And it probably won't do you any favors in anything other than a moderately cold one, where water conservation might be important (like an arctic desert environment).

Yes, a nit-pick, but having been in situations where knowing multi-environmental wilderness survival was vital to my being here today, it's a glaring error to me.

I don 't know if the author got most of that right in the book, since I heard things were changed for the movie, but none of the movies have gotten it right, probably because they want you to see the actor's face, putting performance above reality. It's a movie, after all. Believability doesn't have to exist as long as it's a good story.

I didn't find it to be a very good story, myself. But that's just me (and millions of others). Something something about the impossibility of pleasing all the people all the time, there. I think the failing was mostly assuming the audience had read the book and were expected to fill in the details, since a lot seemed to assume you knew what was going on already. Which probably made the deviations FROM the story (of which I understand the original and current offerings have done) pretty puzzling.
