The England defender was due to miss the quarter-final with Norway in Miami.

A statement on Thursday confirmed that “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed […] a 2-match suspension for a breach of article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.”

The two-man ban comes after the FIFA Disciplinary Committee concluded Quansah’s tackle on Gallardo during England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico constituted “serious foul play”.

England head coach Thomas Tuchel was left furious by the decision.

"It's just not good enough,” he said. “The referees are just not good enough, fourth officials are just not good enough. That's the bottom line.

“Is this a clear and obvious error for the penalty? For sure not.”

The suspension only applies to the World Cup meaning he will only be available to play again if England reach the final or contest the third-place play-off.

While the FA cannot appeal a red card, it is understood that the FA privately challenged the processes applied and questioned whether VAR had been correctly used when determining Quansah was to be sent off.

Balogun’s ban was overturned and he played against Belgium, though the USA fell to a 4-1 defeat and were eliminated from the competition.
