ReMix of Banjo-Kazooie (N64) by Peach. Original soundtrack by Grant Kirkhope.
Peach has painted a massive musical mural of Banjo-Kazooie's "Guntilda's Lair" that was over 14 years (!) in the making:
"This arrangement of "Gruntilda's Lair" from Banjo-Kazooie is the most ambitious piece of music I've ever tackled. I was assigned the track for a bigger project in 2011, but it was made to stand alone also as a medley that takes a tour through the lair and every world entry, akin to Disney's "It's a Small World". As such, it's a dynamic composition with movements that reflect over a dozen different musical genres, complete with melody cameos from every world, original content, and even soundscape elements. This grand mixture is what inspired the use of the French word "mélange"."
I've somehow never been to any Disney theme park but can still hear where Peach is coming from in terms of inspiration – I imagined wandering through a vast art gallery myself. I also personally hold the belief that Grant Kirkhope's Banjo-Kazooie score is one of the best collections of melodies from the late 90s – game soundtrack or otherwise – and appreciate the ReMixer's mental discipline in blending so many of those melodies together.
Enough about me, judge Hemophiliac comments:
"As far as arrangement goes, there's a TON to personalize this, and not to mention the tiny cameos of other songs to weave into Gruntilda. Arrangement-wise this is fantastic and very well thought out."
Agreed. Despite the length, the "Lair" melody never overstays its welcome, perhaps partly due to it being constantly transmogrified, and partly due to Peach adding a plethora of one-off lead lines and original melodic flourishes to the ReMix. The original writing at about six minutes in is particularly sublime.
Liontamer writes:
"The instrumentation's obviously in the uncanny valley, though it's a modernized, glossier take on the instrumentation quirks of the N64 days, so it all sounds intentional and in-character"
Exactly. This is packed with proper Banjo-flavored sounds (or are they Kirkhope-flavored? What kind of brew is this again?), with marimbas, pizzicato strings, and bassoons that could've been recorded straight from the Nintendo 64. Peach has dropped a fistful of horror, a splash of humor, and a pinch of sleaze into a bubbling cauldron and given it a two-handed stir. You can almost hear Grunty herself…These rousing sounds, you'll hear them too, when you sip this mélange brew!
