NBA Europe franchise sales owners billion structure equity

On the 565th Sporticast episode, hosts Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams discuss some of the biggest sports business stories of the week, including the latest with NBA Europe.

The most recent round of bids for the 12 permanent teams were due Monday afternoon Eastern Time, and the league plans to gradually announce the new owners over the next few months. Some will likely sell in the $1 billion range. They’ll likely go to a mix of existing sports brands like Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain and some first-time sports backers.

The hosts talk about the economic structure of the league. While the equity will be split 50-50 at the start—50% held by the NBA, the other 50% split by the NBA Europe franchise owners—the economics will be spread differently. The NBA, Sportico, reported earlier this week, is planning to put more than 85% of the money generated by the league back into the league at the start. That will come in the form of fixed annual payments and annual performance bonuses. A bulk of the proceeds from the sale of the 12 initial permanent franchises will also go into seeding the league with operational capital and reserves. Once (or if) the league reaches profitability, then the NBA will share in the net income.

Next the hosts talk about the World Cup. The group stage has given way to the knockout rounds, where the drama increases and viewership does as well. The hosts debate whether the U.S. team needs to advance to the quarterfinals for this tournament to have been a success in the eyes of most Americans. They also talk about the success of the U.S. as a host nation, and the way the tournament’s biggest stars have continued to deliver.

They close by talking about Serena Williams‘ return at Wimbledon.
