Meet Emi McSwain, a Boston-area influencer and musician embracing her career journey

Дата публикации: 24-06-2026 15:16:35

You may recognize Emi McSwain from her content showing off cool things to do around Boston. Or maybe you learned her name when she was the victim of a theft while she was lying injured after a serious bike crash. McSwain has embraced her growing presence as an influencer, but this year, she’s celebrating a major milestone in her music career.
Her musical journey started when she was young, growing up a military kid. Music was a source of connection in her home life, and it also made it easier to make friends.
But getting into Berklee College of Music was the moment when McSwain realized she could consider her art as a career.
“My mom wasn’t super thrilled with me, but she came around,” said McSwain, who previously had imagined studying to become a mechanical engineer.
At first, McSwain considered working as a songwriter or manager, not a performer. But as she learned more about the industry, she discovered she wanted more out of making music.
“In order to make it as a songwriter, you can’t just, like, write a good song because there are tons of good songs out there. If I want people to hear my songs, I have to sing them,” McSwain said.
Emi’s road through her musical journey has not always been smooth. She’s struggled with her mental health, a major bump coming when she was in a bike crash.  That accident caused her to lose her hearing in her left ear.
“I was like well, if I’m alive and I have to be here, but I can’t do music, then that is going to be probably the hardest part about this life,” McSwain said.
McSwain admits that she was in a dark place even before the crash. It became a moment of reckoning, and as she recovered, it solidified that music is what she is meant to do.
“I really believe this, that musicians don’t choose to be musicians,” McSwain said. “Something in their life propels them to this, like, form of art that really nothing else is the remedy for.”
Her first album, “Them Apples,” is set to be released on Sept. 25.
The record name stems from McSwain’s full-time job at a grocery story (and yes, it’s also a nod to “Good Will Hunting”). She started writing the album during COVID, when she was shelving apples.
On top of her solo work, she is also in a band called Air Traffic Controller. The band’s new album is out this July.
Between the two albums, nearly a half dozen songs McSwain wrote or contributed to will be released this year.
“I’m really grateful that I had an outlet and I had that experience growing up where I was offered this opportunity to be a musician, because when I really needed it, it was there for me.”
You can hear more of McSwain’s music, including her new single “I Hope When I Die,” on Spotify.
