US Rep. Eric Burlison believes that the US risks falling behind when it comes to UFO transparency and disclosure.

While the UFO phenomenon has long been associated with secrecy and cover-ups, in recent years there has been a significant shift toward greater transparency.

World governments have stopped pretending that nothing has been going on and have begun releasing information to the public, reopening the debate in a more open manner.

We've seen it recently in the US with the House Oversight Committee hearings and the release of secretive UFO files which, between them, have revealed a great deal of information on the topic.

According to Rep. Eric Burlison, however, the US government is still not doing enough.

By not being more transparent about the phenomenon and about the possibilities of alien visitation, he argues, the US risks handing a propaganda victory to rivals such as China and Brazil.

"I think it would definitely be a misstep because of what we would be demonstrating to our people," he told the New York Post.

"We're supposed to be the most transparent country in the world to its citizenry and if another country is able to be more transparent than the United States on this topic it would be a blemish on our otherwise pristine legacy on transparency."

That said, he also maintains that releases by other countries could also be beneficial.

"If a foreign country validates what we release, it will give more confidence to the American people that this isn't some disinformation campaign or a hoax and I think that would be a good thing," he said.
