Google has promoted ChromeOS 156 to the Stable channel, according to the Chrome Releases blog, bringing most supported Chromebooks to platform version 16836.19.0 and browser version 156.0.8078.42.
The update adds Gemini-powered Talk to Type dictation, video and audio questions on Chromebook Plus devices, and the security fixes from the Chrome 156 browser core.
There was no ChromeOS 155. Google moved the Chrome browser to a two-week release cycle while keeping ChromeOS on a four-week schedule, so starting with version 154 ChromeOS skips odd numbers and jumps two milestones at a time to stay aligned with the browser it ships.
Google has not updated its ChromeOS release notes hub past version 154. The feature list comes from the Chrome Enterprise release notes, which tag the Chrome 156 features arriving on ChromeOS, and from Google's What's New in Chrome page.
ChromeOS 156 Gemini Features and Web App ChangesTalk to Type is the headline addition. The Gemini feature lets users dictate into any text field on the web, and inside Gemini in Chrome, while it rewrites the speech, strips out filler words, and handles corrections made mid-sentence.
Google is rolling Talk to Type out gradually on the server side, and availability varies by account and region, so the feature may not appear right after the update. The other user-facing changes in ChromeOS 156:
ChromeOS 156 includes the 353 security fixes from the Chrome 156 browser, six of them critical memory corruption patches, plus two high-severity Mali GPU kernel fixes specific to ChromeOS, one of which covers MediaTek MT8196 boards. The release also carries the default permission prompt before insecure HTTP connections and the Gemini-based ClickFix scam protection that Google recently added to Chrome's Enhanced Protection mode.
Chromebook owners can install the update right away:
For administrators, ChromeOS 156 finalizes restrictions on local network access probing, deprecates legacy autofill policies, and improves Back/Forward cache behavior for pages with active WebSockets.
Google has not posted a consumer changelog on the Chromebook Community forums yet, so model-specific changes for individual Chromebooks are not documented.
