Google is rebranding NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook, positioning the research tool under its Gemini branding, according to the company. The rebranding involves only a name and logo change and will not impact existing notebooks.

In addition, Google is expanding access to a secure cloud-based computing feature to all Google AI Pro subscribers on the web over the next few weeks. This feature was previously limited to AI Ultra and Workspace business customers. According to Google, NotebookLM is used by over 30 million people.

What Changes as NotebookLM Becomes Gemini Notebook and Why

The core change is a rebrand. NotebookLM becomes Gemini Notebook, joining Google's expanding set of Gemini-branded products. Key points:

  • The tool retains the same functionality it had as NotebookLM
  • Existing notebooks are not affected by the rebrand
  • The change includes a new colorful logo
  • Users may see NotebookLM appear as Gemini Notebook on their phone or in the Gemini app.

NotebookLM was originally introduced as an experimental tool showcased at Google I/O 2023 under the name Project Tailwind. Google later launched it publicly as NotebookLM, and it has become one of the company's more successful AI projects over the past three years.

The rebrand serves to unify Google's AI tools under the Gemini brand. Over the past year, Google has incorporated Gemini across nearly all its products. NotebookLM is already powered by Gemini and can be accessed directly through the Gemini app.

Naming it Gemini Notebook aligns it with other Gemini-branded services such as the Gemini app and Gemini Live.

This move strengthens Gemini's position as Google's all-in-one AI platform. As NotebookLM's popularity continues to grow, integrating it into the Gemini brand helps extend Gemini's reach to its user base.

Cloud Computer Access Expands to AI Pro and What It Means for Users

The main functional update following the rebrand is the expanded access to secure cloud computing. In June, Google announced that every NotebookLM notebook would be able to access a secure cloud-based computer, allowing the AI tool to write and execute code on the user's behalf.

This cloud computer enables Gemini Notebook to write and run code, analyze data, perform complex calculations, and handle advanced research tasks without relying on the user's local device.

Until now, this feature was available only to Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra and AI Expanded plans. Over the next few weeks, Google plans to extend cloud computing access to all Google AI Pro subscribers on the web.

For existing NotebookLM users, no action is needed for the rebrand, and their notebooks will continue to work as before. The interface and features remain the same, apart from the change in name and logo. Users should expect the name to change to Gemini Notebook across the app and web interface in the coming weeks.

Google AI Pro subscribers will gain access to the cloud computer feature on the web over the next few weeks. This feature allows code execution, data analysis, and complex research tasks. Once rolled out, users can access it through the Gemini Notebook interface.

For free-tier users, the cloud computer feature will still be limited to paid plans, including AI Pro, AI Ultra, and qualifying Workspace plans. Free users will continue to access the core Gemini Notebook features that were previously available under the NotebookLM name.

How Gemini Notebook Is Spreading Across Google Products and When It Will Be Available

Google continues to roll out the integration of Gemini Notebook across its products and services. After introducing Gemini in its app, the company plans to embed Gemini Notebook directly into AI Mode within Search.

This approach aligns with Google's broader strategy of incorporating Gemini features throughout its ecosystem, including Search, Workspace, Chrome, and Android. Integrating Gemini Notebook into AI Mode would allow users to access notebook-style research tools directly from search results.

The rebranding of Gemini Notebook is currently underway. Over the coming weeks, users will notice the name and logo updates across the app and website.

Additionally, the expansion of the cloud computer feature to Google AI Pro subscribers on the web is also happening in phases over the next few weeks. Google has not announced a specific date for when all AI Pro users will gain access.

There is no official timeline yet for integrating Gemini Notebook into AI Mode within Search. Users can stay tuned to Google's official channels for updates on the rebrand, the cloud computer feature, and other integrations across Google products.
