Robert E. Hall, Michael Woodford win economics Nobel for work on economic shock
Let’s begin with this year’s Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. American economists Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford have won the prize for their work on models that help governments and central banks manage economic shocks. Their research provides a foundation for models used worldwide to respond to disruptions such as energy crises and sudden changes in household consumption. The prize carries 12 million Swedish kronor, or about 1.2 million dollars.
Retail inflation jumps to 21 months high of 5.54% in September
Next up, retail inflation in India rose to a 21-month high of 5.54 per cent in September, up from 4.83 per cent in August, driven by a low base effect and rising food prices. Inflation is now close to the Reserve Bank of India’s upper tolerance limit of 6 per cent. Economists expect further increases in the coming months, with markets anticipating another interest rate hike at the Monetary Policy Committee’s December meeting, following October’s hike after a four-year gap.
Jantar Mantar denotified as protest site, police names three new venues
Turning to protests in the national capital, Delhi Police has removed Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site and named three new venues: Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in East Delhi. The order, issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar on October 11, follows recommendations by a committee set up by the Union Home Ministry to identify alternative venues for demonstrations. A revised standard operating procedure for organising protests at the three locations will be issued separately.
Canadian Trade Minister leads biggest trade delegation to India in 30 years as FTA talks gather pace
Finally, in India-Canada trade ties, Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu is leading a nearly 300-member trade delegation to India from October 12 to 17, with visits to Mumbai and Bengaluru. The mission comes as both countries work towards finalising a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement by the end of this year, aiming to double annual bilateral trade to 70 billion Canadian dollars by 2030. Key issues in the negotiations include agricultural market access, worker visas, energy, technology and critical minerals.
