Given that it took 14 years for this to go from vapourware to tangible product, I doubt long-time fans of the concept will see a delay from Q3 2026 to Q1 2027 as a comparative blink of the eye.
While they sort out the the hardware snags, work on the software has continued. NexPhone may now ship with Android 17, and the team is modifying Android’s desktop mode – convergence is the USP of the handset – to behave more like a desktop.
For those not familiar, the NexPhone is a mid-range smartphone touting a multiOS system of Android 16, Debian (as an Android app) and Windows 11 on ARM. Back in 2012, when it was first conceived, it would’ve run Ubuntu as its Linux flavour.
NexPhone features a 6.5-inch 120 Hz display, an 8-core Kryo 670 CPU, an Adreno 643 GPU, and 12 GB of RAM. It offers 256 GB of storage and a 64 MP Sony IMX787 main camera.
A fully-featured USB Type-C port means users can drive a ‘desktop’ experience when connected to a monitor and input devices. Helpfully, it even comes with a multi-function USB Type-C hub in the box.
The initial pre-order price of $549 has risen (because of memory costs) to $599 for newcomers, and the final ‘retail’ cost will be higher still. Existing pre-orders aren’t affected by the cost increase, naturally.
