HBO has greenlit a one-hour drama series based on ‘Crazy Rich Asians,’ with original cast members Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng set to return, alongside Michelle Yeoh in a recurring role.

Based on Kevin Kwan’s global bestselling books, the new series will pick up after the events of the blockbuster 2018 film, which became the highest-grossing Hollywood studio romantic comedy at the North American box office in nearly a decade.

Golden Globe nominee Constance Wu, Actor Award nominee Henry Golding and Emmy Award winner Ronny Chieng will reprise their roles as series regulars, while Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh will return in a recurring capacity.

The original film introduced audiences to Rachel Chu (Wu), who discovers the extraordinary wealth and social standing of her boyfriend Nick Young (Golding) and finds herself navigating the extravagant world of Singapore’s elite. The film’s success helped establish ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ as a major romantic comedy phenomenon, with its lavish settings, family drama and exploration of cultural identity capturing audiences worldwide.

Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film, will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the HBO series. Kevin Kwan will also executive produce, alongside Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson and the film’s director, Jon M. Chu.

The series marks a return to the world of the bestselling novels, bringing back familiar faces while continuing the story beyond the events of the film. Further details about the plot, additional casting and the series’ premiere date have yet to be announced.
