Hiro Murai has lined up yet another TV project after a record-breaking 14 Emmy wins for his Apple TV series, “Widow’s Bay,” and this one may be even more intriguing than “The Marriage Plot” with Sadie Sink. Why? Because none other than Chinese auteur Wong Kar Wai is involved.
Deadline reports that FX has a series order for a crime drama pilot helmed by Murai, with Havana Rose Liu set to star. “Interior Chinatown” writer Charles Yu and “Turning Red” writer Julia Cho pen a script from an original story by Wong, about a petty criminal who inherits a share in a mysterious and ultra-powerful corporation, vaulting her into a world of unimaginable wealth populated by ruthless elites. That sounds like a strong setup and a potential star-making role for Liu, if projects like “The Debut“ and “Elden Ring“ don’t launch the actress first.
Searchlight Television will produce the still-untitled pilot, set to shoot in Bangkok later this month. Yu, Cho, and Murai serve as executive producers on the series alongside Carver Karaszewski, Claudia Shin, Kate Dean, Paul Schwartzman, and Wong.
Other recent credits for Liu include Nicolas Winding Refn‘s “Her Private Hell,” Daniel Roher‘s “Tuner,” Alex Russell‘s “Lurker,” and John Carney‘s “Power Ballad.” The actress first made a splash in Emma Seligman‘s 2023 comedy “Bottoms,” but expect her turn in Jesse Eisenberg‘s “The Debut” to turn heads later this year. Liu also has Arkasha Stevenson‘s bachelor party slasher at A24 on the way, which should hit theaters sometime in 2027, and “Hyena,” a psychological thriller produced by the late David Lynch.
Meanwhile, Murai is one of television’s most in-demand directors after the huge success of “Widow’s Bay” at this year’s Emmys. At the awards show, he became the first Asian director to win the Comedy Directing Emmy, the third Emmy of his career. Both this pilot and “THe Marriage Plot” are FX productions, where he’s worked for most of his career.
As for Wong Kar Wai, he hasn’t made a film since 2013’s “The Grandmaster,” but remains a cinematic icon for his earlier works like “Chungking Express,” “In The Mood For Love,” and others. His Chinese drama series “Blossoms Shanghai“ finally reached US audiences last year and streams on the Criterion Channel.
