Canon’s EOS R6 V is a full-frame camera built primarily for video creators and professional videographers, with features such as active cooling, 7K open-gate recording, uncropped 4K 120p and dedicated vertical-shooting controls. Its video-first design worked well during tech shoots, including outdoor filming, while the absence of an electronic viewfinder can be a drawback for photographers, especially in bright sunlight.
Canon has made its priorities clear with the EOS R6 V. This is a full-frame camera designed for people who shoot video first.
We used it to shoot our own tech videos, both indoors and outdoors, and that experience makes the R6 V’s design choices easier to understand. It takes the R6 Mark III platform, removes the electronic viewfinder and adds active cooling, while adding controls and features aimed at creators and professional videographers.
Price and availabilityThe Canon EOS R6 V is priced at ₹2,35,995 for the body. The RF 20-50mm F4L power zoom costs ₹1,42,995, while the kit is priced at ₹3,55,995.
Buying both separately would cost ₹3,78,990, making the kit around ₹23,000 cheaper. It is now available in India.
DesignAt around 688 grams with the battery and card, the R6 V is relatively compact for a full-frame video camera.
There is no EVF. Instead, Canon has added a tally lamp, front record button, power zoom lever and a tripod mount designed for vertical shooting. You also get CFexpress Type B and UHS-II SD card slots.
What we also liked was two seperate buttons to start recording footage which meant the orientation was never a problem.
After using it for tech shoots, these choices make sense. It feels more like a video camera than a traditional hybrid camera.
DisplayThe 3-inch fully articulating touchscreen rotates its interface automatically when shooting vertically, which is useful when you're creating both long-form and short-form content.
But the missing EVF is noticeable outdoors. We shot with the camera in bright environments, and in harsh sunlight, framing through the LCD isn't always ideal.
For controlled indoor shoots, interviews and product videos, it is much less of an issue.
Video and performanceThis is where the R6 V makes its biggest case.
You get Canon Log 2 and 3, 7K 60p RAW Light, uncropped 4K 120p and 7K open gate. That last feature is particularly useful for creators because one shot can be reframed for 16:9, 9:16 or square content.
The built-in fan is another major difference. Canon claims roughly three times longer 7K open-gate MP4 recording than the R6 Mark III before overheating becomes an issue.
During our tech shoots, that video-first approach was apparent. Whether we were shooting product footage, talking-head pieces or moving outdoors, the camera is designed to stay focused on recording rather than behaving like a stills camera that happens to shoot good video.
You also get useful production features such as a red recording border and proxy recording.
Camera and stabilisationThe camera was used to shoo the B-rolls for our Galaxy Z Fold 8 hands on video in London. Check it out here!
The R6 V uses a 32.5MP full-frame sensor and offers up to 40fps electronic-shutter burst shooting.
For video, the combination of IBIS and the RF 20-50mm F4L power zoom is rated for up to 8 stops of combined stabilisation. The power zoom also works well for solo creators who want to change framing without physically rotating the lens.
VerdictThe EOS R6 V is a camera designed around a simple idea: video comes first.
Our experience shooting tech content, including outdoors, showed why the cooling system, open-gate recording, vertical controls and video-focused design matter.
The lack of an EVF will be a compromise for photographers, particularly outdoors. But if most of your work involves shooting video for hours at a time, the R6 V is built much more around that workflow than a conventional hybrid camera.
