As negotiations intensify to reshape the EU’s portfolio of research and innovation partnerships, we take a close look at the distribution of project funding currently flowing through the largest, the Joint Undertakings (JUs). 

Out of the 11 current JUs, operating in sectors from hydrogen and aviation to health and the bio-economy, there are nine that issue calls through Horizon Europe’s Pillar 2 for collaborative projects. The High-Performance Computing JU and Fusion for Energy issue their own calls.

Under Pillar 2, a total of 873 grants worth €7.9 billion have been awarded so far under JU calls, with 6,094 organisations participating 14,900 times. The most intense activity is in the areas of climate, energy and mobility, followed by digital, industry and space.
