The tennis legend and rock singer-songwriter are saying goodbye to one of their two houses in the exclusive Paradise Cove enclave.
John McEnroe and Patty Smyth picked up a contemporary beachfront home in Malibu’s exclusive Paradise Cove enclave in 2015 for $21 million. The pop culture icons—who met in 1993 at a mutual friend’s Christmas party and married in 1997—have regularly visited the serene retreat through the years to escape the bustle of New York, where they primarily reside on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
The retired tennis pro and lead singer for the 1980s rock band Scandal have now decided to say goodbye to the 6,500-square-foot residence, listing the estate for $35 million with Chris Cortazzo of Compass. The couple will maintain a local footprint, keeping a modest inland ranch house in the same neighborhood that they acquired in 2013 for $3.35 million.

Designed and built in the mid-1990s by noted architect Steven Ehrlich and later remodeled by interior designer Michael Lee, the white stucco and green tinted-glass residence offers four bedrooms and half a dozen bathrooms. Roughly 6,500 square feet across multiple levels are accessible via a central staircase and an elevator, along with a dumbwaiter.
Upon passing through a deep portico entryway abutting an attached two-car garage, a vaulted reception gallery sits beneath a prominent glass atrium. This light-filled hub transitions down to a combined living and dining area featuring a soaring fireplace and access to an expansive deck overlooking the Pacific. Nearby, a kitchen is outfitted with an eat-in island, Gaggenau and Sub-Zero appliances, and an adjoining breakfast nook.

A spacious primary suite enjoys a dedicated air-conditioning unit, dual walk-in closets, and a sky-lit bath with radiant-heated stone floors, dual vanities, a freestanding soaking tub, and a steam shower. The multi-level layout also accommodates three additional bedroom suites and a lofty library/office, while a kitchenette, dining area, and wet bar-equipped family room spill out to covered deck with a hot tub and steps traveling down to the sand. Adding a touch of tropical flair: an open-air pavilion nestled into the lush vegetation, the perfect spot for a gym or yoga practice.
As they approach their 30th wedding anniversary, the bi-coastal duo remains as active as ever. When they aren’t managing busy broadcast and touring schedules, they can be found sharing the stage—most recently this past August for a collaborative music performance at Guild Hall in East Hampton.
