KANSAS CITY, MO. — As demand for premium, protein-rich pet food grows, the pet food industry is competing more directly with the human food sector for many of the same animal-based protein sources. In response, manufacturers are increasingly turning to alternative proteins, including insect ingredients, cultivated proteins and plant-based options, as sustainable solutions that can reduce pressure on traditional supply chains while supporting long-term environmental goals.

Ingredient availability was one of the many topics of discussion during the State of the Industry panel at the 2026 Pet Food Processing Exchange in Kansas City from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1, hosted by Pet Food Processing and Sosland Publishing Co.

Industry leaders Jennifer Radosevich, Ph.D., of Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Phillip Bramel of Vets Plus and Catherine McCarthy of Curious & Co. Strategy + Innovation discussed the challenges facing the pet food industry in the panel moderated by BSM Partners Chief Operations and Sales Officer Bob Riebe.

Radosevich emphasized “future proofing protein sources for the pet food industry.” With increasing pressure on finite protein supplies and growing sustainability concerns, the industry cannot afford to wait until shortages become a reality.
