The BBC has announced a two-part documentary series about JK Rowling that will examine her “contested legacy” and her interventions on issues including gender identity.

The series will air on BBC Two, BBC Scotland and iPlayer. Press material says it will follow Rowling’s “dramatic rise and cultural influence”, while “using her life as a lens” to explore three decades of social, political and technological change.

The same press material says the doc will also explore Rowling as a divisive figure, stating: “Admired by supporters as a fearless defender of women’s rights and condemned by critics who call her an opponent of trans equality, she finds herself divided from some of the actors and fans who once championed her work.”

Rowling is not participating in the docuseries, with archive material being used instead, as well as her writing and interviews with people who have worked with her.

The first episode will look at the creation of Harry Potter and its prolonged success.

The second episode will examine Rowling’s interventions on Scottish independence, feminism, free speech and gender identity.

Simon Young, BBC history’s head of commissioning, said: “Thirty years after the publication of the first Harry Potter book, there feels like no better time for the BBC to explore one of the towering figures of British literature.”

He added: “No cultural history of Britain in the 21st century would be complete without the story of the boy wizard that J.K. Rowling created, the publishing and film-making phenomenon that she spawned, or the polarising public figure she has become.”

Rowling is the British author best known for the Harry Potter novels, which became a global publishing and film phenomenon. In recent years, she has become a central figure in UK debates about trans rights and gender identity, drawing both strong support and intense criticism, including high-profile disputes with parts of the franchise’s fanbase and some performers associated with it, such as Bel Powley, who will play Petunia Dursley in the HBO reboot.

She also writes crime fiction under the pen name Robert Galbraith, including the Cormoran Strike novels, which have been adapted for television.
