University of Rhode Island Housing and Residential Life received a report of a mold concern in a Coddington Hall dorm on Oct. 3.
HRL temporarily relocated the students living there. A third-party vendor is working to address the issue, according to Thomas Cooley, assistant vice president of student affairs and campus living.
“After inspecting the room, our facilities team determined that out of an abundance of caution, we should move forward with a room change,” Cooley said.
While the students were moved out, the type of mold has not been confirmed.
“It is too early to characterize the material or its cause,” Cooley said. “The one instance of mold was reported this past weekend and is currently being addressed by our contracted vendor.”
Coddington Hall opened in 1996 as part of the Roger Williams Housing Complex, according to the URI Detailed History page.
There is no indication that the building’s age caused the mold, according to Cooley.
“Moisture, humidity and water intrusion can contribute to mold growth in buildings of any age,” Cooley said. “Mold spores are routinely present in both the indoor and outdoor environment.”
While mold is a natural part of the environment, it can quickly become an issue when it enters indoors.
“The key to controlling mold growth is moisture control,” Cooley said. “Which includes maintaining moderate relative humidity levels indoors and responding promptly to water intrusion.”
URI also maintains a published Mold Prevention and Remediation Protocol, which outlines the University’s process when mold may be present, as well as the best practices to avoid mold.
It is unclear whether students having to move out of their dorm will receive financial compensation.
“Tuition and housing charges are separate,” Cooley said. “Housing is funded through housing fees. We prioritize addressing maintenance concerns promptly and providing appropriate housing support when a room change is necessary.”
No changes will be made to residence halls in the Roger Williams Complex; housing will continue to evaluate residence halls’ needs, according to Cooley.
Cooley encourages students to report any concerns, including mold growth to the URI My Housing Portal app.
“If any student is concerned about mold in their living space they should report the concern,” Cooley said. “We will work with that student to solve the issue; reporting it is a necessary first step.”
As residence halls age, they require updates. Cooley and the HRL team are preparing to take a closer look at campus buildings.
“We will have an opportunity to reassess our existing housing stock and determine the best path forward to meet the needs of our students and the university community,” Cooley said.
