Comment on Google Prepares to Remove the "Only Send SMS and MMS Messages" Toggle From Google Messages by ECJ

Дата публикации: 08-10-2026 14:57:44

Making Google Messages the only viable SMS app is going to be problematic. Outside of a backwards uncivilized country like the USA, there are only two reasons to use SMS instead of messaging apps like Signal:
1) Companies being able to sent text messages to a particular phone number (for example 2FA, which has always been a dumb form of 2FA).
2) People without a mobile data plan being able to send text messages over the cellular network when outside of Wi-Fi range. This one is pretty important.
Point 1 should be a moot point as email should be an alternative option instead. Or passkeys, instead of a really non user-friendly form of 2FA like requiring a mobile phone.
Point 2 is where Google pushing RCS is going to be a problem. If Google force RCS only – which is what head-up-arse Silicon Valley types will eventually do – they will cut off those people. If you need mobile data to use RCS anyway, why pay insane amounts per a megabyte of data for RCS? It makes no sense to use it instead of something like Signal.
Why are Google so fixated on controlling RCS? What would be more beneficial to the world would be adopting an open standard for end-to-end encrypted email – one capable of being able to tackle spam and unsolicited emails. Yet, Google seem remarkable quiet on businesses and people using plain text email despite being a major email provider…

Google is preparing to remove the "Only send SMS and MMS messages" setting from Google Messages on Android, according to code strings found in the beta version messages.android_20261002_00_RC00 of the app. The change is not live in the stable release, and Google has not announced it.

The toggle currently sits in the conversation details screen. Turning it on forces Google Messages to use SMS and MMS instead of RCS for that one conversation, while RCS stays active for every other contact.

Without the toggle, the choice becomes all or nothing. Users will either disable RCS entirely in Google Messages or keep it turned on for every contact.

Google Messages Will Show a Banner Before the Setting Disappears

The beta code contains the text for a banner on the home screen of the app. Titled "Switch to RCS chats now," the banner tells users that the "Only send SMS & MMS messages" setting is going away and asks them to switch now or let it update automatically. It offers two buttons, Switch now and Dismiss.

Those strings point to a gradual migration rather than a silent removal. Conversations that use the SMS-only setting would move to RCS when the user taps Switch now, or later when the app updates them on its own. Ignoring the banner does not delete any chats, and the strings do not mention a deadline for the automatic switch.

The per-conversation toggle has practical value for some users. People rely on it to keep specific contacts on SMS, and it has also served as a way to limit spam in Google Messages. The removal is one of a string of changes to the app, which recently added a floating long-press menu and swipe gestures.

How to Check Which Google Messages Chats Use SMS Only

Users who depend on the setting can review their conversations before the banner arrives:

  1. Open Google Messages and select a conversation.
  2. Open the conversation details screen.
  3. Check whether the "Only send SMS and MMS messages" toggle is turned on, and note the contacts that use it.

After the toggle is gone, the only remaining way to avoid RCS for a contact will be to turn off RCS for all conversations in the Google Messages settings.

The code strings do not include a date, and Google has not confirmed when the setting will be removed from the stable version of Google Messages.
