OpenAI rolled out GPT-6 with Intelligent UI to ChatGPT this week, letting the model generate interactive diagrams, charts, buttons and custom tools inside conversations instead of plain text. The feature reaches over 1.2 billion weekly users and adapts the interface to each query. Early tests show practical gains for learning and task completion.
OpenAI just delivered its most visible change to ChatGPT in years. The company began rolling out GPT-6 models to all users this week, paired with a new system it calls Intelligent UI. Responses that once arrived as plain paragraphs now frequently include diagrams, tappable buttons, adjustable charts, forms, and miniature interactive tools built on the fly.
The shift feels immediate. Ask about the mechanics of a seven-speed bicycle and ChatGPT no longer lists components in text. It produces an annotated diagram. Tap a section and it highlights the frame, wheels or drivetrain while offering further explanation. The same holds for planning a multi-day hike. A map appears with suggested routes, elevation profiles and supply checklists that users can edit directly inside the conversation.
OpenAI’s official announcement frames the feature as a practical advance. “With Intelligent UI, responses can include graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts, and interactive experiences you can use directly in your conversation,” the post states. “The format depends on what you’re asking. A comparison might work best side by side. An explanation might be easier to understand through an interactive diagram.”
Product manager Aarush Selvan told TechCrunch that ChatGPT has “predominantly been a text-based interface.” The goal, he said, is to help users “get things done. The most helpful answers aren’t just text.”
Examples keep coming. A recipe for Sunday roast now displays photos of each dish, plus and minus controls to adjust guest count, an automatically updated shopping list, a copy button and a timed cooking checklist. Request a retirement savings calculator and sliders appear for income, expenses and time horizon. Change any variable and the projection updates instantly. Even simpler queries generate multiple-choice follow-ups to refine results or integrated maps for travel plans.
But the system doesn’t force visuals everywhere. When plain text works best, it delivers that. Users can also dial back the volume of interactive elements through settings, much like adjusting personality or response length.
Behind the scenes the technology relies on a library of native, streamable components and a compiler that assembles the interface while the model generates text. The result appears progressively. No waiting for the full answer to finish before anything shows up. GPT-6 can also begin replying while it continues thinking. OpenAI reports this cuts the time to first token by 44 percent on average for queries needing web search compared with the prior GPT-5.6 model.
Early hands-on tests impressed reviewers. WIRED writer Reece Rogers tried an airplane seat explorer that compared cabin layouts across Alaska and Delta aircraft. Tapping any seat revealed details. Exit rows glowed green. He also built a San Francisco apartment affordability calculator with movable sliders. “These visual elements felt like a welcome change,” Rogers wrote.
The rollout follows a pattern OpenAI has refined. Paid subscribers on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers received GPT-6 Sol with Intelligent UI starting October 7 in the main Chat tab. Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna beginning October 8. Enterprise administrators control availability. The update does not affect the separate Work or Codex experiences.
This marks the second major GPT-6 release in recent weeks. Last month OpenAI introduced earlier versions to select paid customers. The models tuned for everyday ChatGPT use now reach more than 1.2 billion weekly users. That’s the company’s largest single expansion yet.
Competitive pressure clearly played a role. Google introduced a similar generative interface capability for Gemini earlier in 2026. The Verge noted that OpenAI’s version appears more graphics-heavy and colorful. It also arrives with stronger safety training. GPT-6 showed improved resistance to attempts to bypass restrictions, according to OpenAI.
Analysts see broader implications. Traditional software forces users to learn fixed interfaces built around specific tasks. ChatGPT now generates the interface around the question itself. A one-line request can summon a bill splitter, a small retro game, or a custom chart without opening another app. Some observers wonder how many standalone calculator-style tools survive this change.
Yet limitations remain. OpenAI acknowledges that the model’s design judgment “still needs more work.” Not every generated interface hits the mark for clarity or usefulness. Training involved scoring outputs on those criteria, but results vary. Complex workflows may still require multiple steps or human refinement.
And questions linger about monetization. More engaging, interactive responses could blur lines between helpful content and future advertising. SiliconANGLE raised the possibility that users might struggle to distinguish native AI output from sponsored elements down the road. OpenAI has not detailed plans on that front.
Even so, the direction looks clear. ChatGPT is evolving from conversational partner to dynamic workspace. Responses no longer sit static on the page. They invite interaction, adjustment and immediate action. For millions of students, professionals and casual users, the difference will feel less like a software update and more like an entirely new way to get answers.
That change arrives at scale. Starting this week, the majority of ChatGPT’s enormous user base will encounter it. The era of the wall of text is giving way to something more visual, more responsive and, OpenAI hopes, far more useful.
