Dialogic Reading: A Way to Support Early Literacy and Math Skills in Preschoolers

Дата публикации: 25-09-2026 00:00:00

Early literacy and math skills are critical for long-term academic success. While dialogic reading is widely recognized for supporting early literacy development, its potential to enhance both literacy and math simultaneously has received limited attention in existing research. To address this gap, this study aims to examine the effects of dialogic reading intervention on children’s early literacy and early math skills. Fifty-nine children (33 boys and 26 girls) and four teachers from four preschool classrooms in a public school were randomly assigned to either the experimental group ( = 57.15 months) or the control group ( = 57.48 months). The same six math storybooks were read three times a week for six weeks using dialogic reading method by teachers in the experimental groups, while the control groups did not have dialogic reading and math storybooks. The results revealed that dialogic reading intervention with math storybooks significantly increased children’s early literacy and early math skills compared to the control conditions. These findings indicate that dialogic reading with math storybooks can effectively promote dual-domain development in early childhood. As one of the first quasi-experimental studies to examine the combined effects of dialogic reading on literacy and math outcomes, this research offers practical and accessible strategies for educators and policymakers aiming to support multiple foundational skills through integrated teaching methods.
