Children’s Perceptions of Early Experiences With a Multilingual Environment and Language Learning

Дата публикации: 03-10-2026 00:00:00

Children learn new languages in multilingual settings through formal and informal exposure and interaction with teachers and peers. The study explored how children perceive the multilingual environment in which they grow up as agents, expressing themselves through play in artwork. This mini-ethnographic study used purposive sampling of six preschool children aged 5 years who spoke Arabic and Russian as their first languages (L1) and were learning Hebrew as an L2, both within and outside the preschool classroom, in a mixed-population city in Israel. Playful art activities were used to engage children in research and elicit their perceptions as an ecologically valid research tool. Theory-drawn thematic analysis resulted in the following themes: awareness of the multilingual environment, attitudes towards languages, and language preferences; motives for language learning; issues in language socialization; metacognitive beliefs: metacognitive beliefs about themselves as language learners; metacognitive beliefs about others as language learners; and metacognitive beliefs about how to teach L2. The results show how children’s perceptions reflect their here-and-now experiences in a multilingual environment, amid a complex meeting of different ethnolinguistic communities. It sheds light on how children enact their agency by applying diverse cognitive and social strategies in L2 learning.
