“A house divided against itself cannot stand.”

In these times of division and danger, Abraham Lincoln’s prophetic words still ring true today.  Our democracy cannot stand without an informed, aroused, consensus-seeking voting public.

The current level of public conversation is a petty, mindless, toxic gabble: polls, personal scandals, campaign strategies, money raised for campaign war chests. But in Maine’s current political race, I know of one candidate who persistently strives to raise the level of public conversation to: issues, policies, political platforms, voting records.

I know of one candidate who has consistently sought mutual understanding, consensus and bipartisan collaboration. I know of one candidate whose statecraft, long service in our state Senate and persistent voice of sense and sanity entitle him to stand in Lincoln’s long shadow.

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, please join me in voting for Richard Bennett, independent candidate for the governorship of Maine.
