СпутникиРНSpaceXРоскосмосNASAwebcomiclibrary:Hiya peeps, as some of yall have likely heard by now, on Tuesday (9/22/26), a leak went out stating that Kakao plans to close their previously acquired US webcomic company, Tapas, alongside a bunch of other reorganization. It’s difficult for me to break down the levels of grief I have about this but I will try.As a Reader: When I first began my dive into the world of webcomics in 2014 Tapas, or Tapastic as it known then, was one of the first platforms I became familiar with. I had made comments on the series I enjoyed, explored so many stories, I even made an attempt at making a webcomic of my own once upon a time, though I found myself better suited for reading than creating in the end. It’s been a stepping stone of my comic experience and I’m heartbroken to see it go.As a Documenter: Tapas was among the first app-based webcomic platforms in the US opening in 2012, predating Webtoon which opened in 2014. While other platforms have risen up over the decade it’s still considered a popular alternative to Webtoon. There’s hundreds of thousands of series published on the platform over the course of well over a decade with their accompanying communities that will soon be gone. There’s much to do to preserve as much of that community and its history as possible and the effects this will have will inevitably be felt for a long time to come.As a Moderator: In February 2022 I was contracted as a Community Content Moderator for Tapas and have been doing this job for +4.5 years. I was hired in part due to my work here on the WCL, both for technical knowledge from running this project and my empathy with the broader comics community. I’ve been grateful every day to have a day job where I can regularly interact with my passions, be a more direct advocate where I can for the creators on the platform, and have more financial stability for doing so. The impending loss of that alongside needing to renter the job market is scary, upsetting, and frustrating.I learned the news at the same time as everyone else, in some cases after as I was told about it from a friend, and frankly I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. There’s a lot in this situation to mourn. While we’re all looking for more information to work with here’s my current next steps:My first priority will be my day job. I haven’t locked in the details of my finite employment yet, but it’s currently looking like I’ll remain in my moderation role until Tapas is officially closed down. I’ll also begin the process of securing a new job. I don’t want to go into detail about my finances but I have been open previously about my health issues I really need stability to maintain. If anyone’s got a lead on experienced content moderation jobs, particularly when it comes to images, comics/novels media and other User Generated Content feel free to throw it my way. I don’t push it much but I do also offer methods to provide monetary and other types of support during this time.In the middle of all that The Webcomic Library currently has over 900 series with direct links that will need to be updated. My other database project, The Webcomic Travelogue has already been mostly updated since there’s multiple people working on it and have been absolutely booking it since the news dropped, but as a one person project this transition will obviously take longer. While Tapas shouldn’t be shutting down too suddenly I’d like to get the issue sorted as soon as I can for the creators impacted by this. Luckily I learned from my previous experiences with Smackjeeves and The Great Tumblr Exodus to keep a running tag listing, “Host Site (General)”, to document all mirrors outside of the direct links for the time being. I will be sure to keep yall updated as things pick up on this process. I do have plans to document what I can because I’m in a unique position to do so. How I’m going to approach this considering my current contract I really don’t know yet, but I think it’s something significant that I’d like to talk in more detail about in the future.I believe that’s all I can share for now.
