The Ringgold Playhouse will open it’s fall production of "Eurydice" this Friday night, with a magical retelling of the classic Myth of Orpheus.

The play, written by Sarah Ruhl, revisits the classic Myth of Orpheus through the eyes of the heroine – Eurydice, played by the lovely Colleen Wainright. In a love story that transcends time, life, death and the underworld, Eurydice is a one-of-a-kind theatre experience for audiences over the next two weeks in downtown Ringgold.

“'Eurydice' is a story that I truly believe everyone will find a place in their heart for,” said Director Jessica Wagner.

“It’s a story that is cyclical, because it is something we all experience in our own lives.”

After dying too young on her wedding day, Eurydice embarks on a journey to the underworld, where she reunites with her Father (Michael Ake) and several other colorful characters as she struggles to remember her lost love, Orpheus (Lee Larson).

The show is tragic, inspiring and heartbreaking at times, but Ms. Wagner says that’s all the more reason to appreciate the classic tale.

“We know that grief is coming, and yet we choose to love anyway,” Ms. Wagner added. “It holds memories that we all share, and I hope the show gives every audience member a chance to see a little bit of themselves in the story – and maybe it’ll even bring back a person’s memories of those who have shaped their lives.”

In addition to Ms. Wainright, Mr. Ake and Mr. Larson, the cast is rounded out by Christopher Wagner as “A Nasty Interesting Man,” and Angelica Garza-Hernandez, Marley Kilgore and Zoee Lyle as “Big Stone, Little Stone and Loud Stone,” respectively.

Under Ms. Wagner’s direction, the show is stage managed by Math Wynnemer, and includes lighting and set designs from John Thomas McCecil and Shane Lowery.

“I have been so blessed to work with this amazing cast and crew, and I cannot wait for audiences to experience their joy, spirit and talent,” Ms. Wagner said. “From working with old friends, to a spouse I’ve never directed before in our 12 years together, to brand new faces that have never seen the stage – they have truly come together to bring you something special.”

Now in the company’s 13th full season, TRP continues to celebrate its new venue at 7847 Nashville St. in downtown Ringgold, just a few doors down from the Historic Depot it used for the first 12 years of the company.

“Whether you’ve loved classic mythology for years or this is your first time experiencing a story like this, I think there is something here for everyone,” Ms. Wagner said. “We’ve also created a world that is meant to be experienced as much as watched, with beautiful and creative lighting, aunique set and an emotional sound design that brings the story to life in unexpected ways.”

"Eurydice" will run for six total performances over two weekends, Sept. 11–20. Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11, 12, 18 and 19, with matinee performances at 2 p.m. Sept. 13 and 20.

Tickets for the show are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors/students/military. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online.
