Elmo-loving babies and toddlers may have to give up one of their favorite toys.  

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced an urgent recall of Skip Hop Baby Sesame Street Elmo Silicone Teethers. 

The warning involves the black pupils on Elmo's eyes that can potentially detach from the toy, posing a risk of serious injury or even death from choking.   

Around 22,660 of the teethers were sold in the United States and another 3,177 were sold in Canada, with the toys available at Carter's retail stores and online.  

The recalled teethers, originally manufactured in China, were sold from January 2025 through March 2026 for about $12, according to the CPSC.

The biggest draw of the teether is Elmo's iconic face, which comes with a textured blue key and a fabric crayon box attached.

So far, four consumers reported the eyes detached from the teether. No injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled product.

The company says the problem mostly occurs if the teether is frozen. When the toy is used in that condition, the black pupil section can separate, creating a small, detached part that a baby could potentially choke on. 

The affected product is identified by model number 9R263210, which can be found on a red tag attached to the side of the crayon box. 

It carries CPSC recall number 26-739. 

Parents who believe they have the recalled product are told to stop using it immediately and take it away from children.

Consumers should contact Skip Hop to receive a refund in the form of a gift card, along with instructions for safely disposing of the teether. 

That gift card can be used at William Carter Company brand stores, including Carter's, Skip Hop, OshKosh B'gosh and Little Planet.

The importer is listed as The William Carter Company of Atlanta, Georgia, while Skip Hop Inc of New York is the distributor. Other Skip Hop products are available online - like grow-with-baby bath tubs, activity centers, high chairs and toys.

This is just the latest in a string of recalls impacting parents. 

In May, more than 121,000 children's squeeze toys sold at Walmart and Ollie's Bargain Outlet were recalled over possible asbestos exposure.

Customers were warned 'Funkee Monkee' squishy toys manufactured by Canadian company The Orb Factory may contain fibrous tremolite asbestos, a dangerous material linked to serious respiratory illnesses and cancer. 

In July, an urgent national recall was issued for the TikTok viral fake Squeezy Dumpling toys over a 'severe chemical risk.'

Inhaling the chemical can irritate the eyes, nose and throat while exposure to large amounts may cause skin irritation and a burning sensation throughout the digestive tract.
