Fresh testing by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded a brace of popular crossovers with a Top Safety Pick+ designation, the best result doled out by the independent organization.

Earning the accolade most recently are the 2027 Kia Telluride; and 2026 and 2027 Tesla Model Y, both top sellers for their respective brands. The former was redesigned for this year, so only vehicles built after June 2026 qualify for an award thanks to these models being equipped with ‘Good’-rated headlights. The IIHS says any Tellurides built prior to that date were equipped with headlights earning a ‘Marginal,’ score and don’t qualify. Three cheers for rolling changes, then.

The blocky Telluride has been a success for Kia in this country, though its two best-selling crossovers remain the Sportage and Seltos, which each found well over 20,000 takers in Canada last year. Speaking to the newly rated Model Y, it was redesigned for 2026 and makes the cut thanks to a swath of ‘Good’ ratings in many categories. As noted in the past, ‘Good’ is the highest rating the IIHS uses in its scales.

What are those categories? To qualify as a Top Safety Pick, vehicles need ‘Good’ ratings in the moderate-overlap front, small-overlap front, and side crash tests. In addition, a minimum of ‘Acceptable’ is required for the pedestrian front crash prevention test and headlight performance across all trim levels. The latter is called out to ensure manufacturers don’t try to get away with sequestering the best headlights on expensive top trims, earning the award even though a base model might have the luminary equivalent of fireflies in dusty jam jars.

To earn the coveted ‘+’ appendix on the Top Safety Pick designation, cars need to have a firm ‘Good’ rating in that headlight evaluation, as well as ‘Acceptable’ or ‘Good’ in the recent vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention test introduced a couple of years ago. Like the headlights, qualifying front crash prevention systems need to be standard, not optional.
