The second-row power folding seats may not respond to an obstruction, and so could inadvertently crush passengers

• Hyundai recalling Ioniq 9 EV due to issue with second-row power-folding seats
• The fix includes a software update with anti-pinch protection
• The recall follows a fatal accident that occurred with the Palisade in March 2026

Hyundai is recalling 5,360 examples of its 2026 Ioniq 9 electric SUV. The vehicles are being recalled due to an issue with the power folding rear seats in the higher trims. Earlier this year, Hyundai recalled its Palisade models for the same issue that resulted in the death of a two-year-old in Ohio; it led to a stop-sale of the vehicle. (The Kia Telluride was also recalled following the Palisade’s recall.) Note that this current recall isn’t yet listed in Transport Canada’s database, but it’s likely there are Canadian models affected by this issue, just as the Canadian variants of the Palisade were recalled, as well.

Hyundai notes 100% of the recall population is affected by this issue, which regards the power folding rear seats in the Limited, Calligraphy, and Calligraphy Design trims not always being able to detect a passenger in their way. When the button is pressed to automatically stow the power folding seats, it may not react to a person or object around it. If this happens, the seat will continue to move despite the obstruction, potentially crushing the obstacle.

Hyundai will notify owners by mail of this recall, and they will be advised to take their vehicle to a Hyundai dealership for the remedy. The fix includes an inspection of the Seat Controller software and then an “update the logic for the rear power seat functions.” Hyundai says the revised logic contains contains an anti-pinch protection. The manufacturer will also provide an over-the-air update.

Until the fix is complete, Hyundai is advising owners to use caution when operating those second-row power folding seats and to ensure there is no one in the area during operation.
