Eddie Jones has told England’s rookies they must not waste their chance to impress after he made six personnel changes to his side for Sunday’s Six Nations clash with Italy.

England will look to bounce back from a first-round defeat by Scotland in Rome with Bristol scrum-half Harry Randall an eye-catching selection for the Stadio Olimpico clash.

Randall will make his first Six Nations start with the veteran Ben Youngs dropping to the bench. Prop Will Stuart, lock Charlie Ewels and No 8 Alex Dombrandt all begin the game too.

Jones’ starting XV contains just 347 caps of international experience, but the England head coach said: ‘It's a very young team, but a very good team. It’s a great opportunity for some players to start the game rather than finish the game. We're looking forward to this combination lighting up Rome.

‘We've got a few knocks and bruises from the last game. This 23 is the right 23 to play against Italy.

‘We've been really pleased with Harry. We've just reversed the roles. He's a livewire half-back, he's very good in broken play, and he's got a good solid pass on him. His kicking game is improving.’

England hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie is among the replacements for Italy after his yellow card in Edinburgh proved to be a crucial moment in the Scotland defeat.

Jamie George comes into the starting XV after Jones revealed Cowan-Dickie and Tom Curry have only taken a limited part in training this week. Curry remains England captain for Italy.

In the pack, Maro Itoje switches from lock to back-row alongside Curry and Dombrandt with Nick Isiekwe and Bath captain Ewels the second-row pairing.

‘When we look at the team, we try to maximise our resources. Sam Simmonds played very well at No 8, but we're going to finish with him this week,’ Jones said.

‘We want to see Alex play in a game we think will really suit him. Italy tends to be a more open and unstructured game, so we feel that it's a great game for him to start.

‘Curry picks himself at seven and then we've gone for a big six. We want to get a bit more running out of Maro in terms of his attack and this is a great opportunity for him.

’Exeter’s Jack Nowell starts on the wing for England while Leicester’s Ollie Chessum is in line for a debut off the bench in Rome.

‘Jack has had three solid weeks of training with us and we feel he’s ready to play. He has that work rate and that bounce in his step. I haven’t seen him this sharp since 2016,’ Jones said.

On Chessum, Jones added: ‘He is a workhorse. He is a traditional six stroke four and a hard worker who has good basics and likes doing the tough stuff.’

England have never been beaten by Italy and the Azzurri have lost their last 34 straight Six Nations matches. Their last win came against Scotland in 2015.

‘They are a well-coached team. They have made some really rapid progress under Kieran Crowley,’ Jones said of his team’s opposition this weekend.

‘They have some good young players coming through. If you look at their Under-20’s over the last four to five seasons, they have done exceptionally well.

‘Now they are getting guys like Paolo Garbisi coming through. He is good enough to keep a World Cup winner like Handre Pollard on the bench at Montpellier.

‘Michele Lamaro is a very tough and strong competitor who would make most international teams and Sebastian Negri has that Zimbabwean beef with the Italian accent.

‘He brings a bit of carry and front foot rugby to their pack. They are not a team you can underestimate and you have to play well to beat them.

‘I’m sure Kieran will have them well prepared.’
