France and Germany have officially abandoned their ambitious sixth-generation fighter jet programme, ending one of Europe’s largest defence projects and dealing a significant setback to efforts aimed at strengthening military cooperation across the continent.

The Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a multinational initiative launched in 2017 and later joined by Spain, was intended to develop a next-generation combat aircraft, accompanying drones, and a secure combat cloud network by around 2040. The project reportedly collapsed after years of disagreements between France’s Dassault Aviation and Airbus, which represented Germany and Spain, over leadership and control of the programme.

The programme was expected to cost approximately $116 billion and was designed to replace several of Europe’s current frontline aircraft, including the Rafale and Eurofighter fleets. Despite repeated efforts by political leaders to salvage the initiative, negotiations ultimately failed to bridge differences between the participating companies.

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had continued discussions on the project in recent weeks. However, French officials indicated that further pressure on the industrial partners was unlikely to produce a breakthrough.

The collapse comes at a particularly sensitive moment for Europe. European governments have increasingly emphasized the need for greater defence autonomy as questions grow over the future role of the United States in regional security and NATO commitments.

For years, European leaders have sought to reduce fragmentation in defence procurement and develop shared military capabilities. FCAS was widely viewed as a flagship programme that could demonstrate Europe’s ability to compete with American and emerging Chinese aerospace technologies while reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.

Its cancellation may now complicate those ambitions. Without a common platform, participating countries could pursue separate national programmes or seek alternative partnerships, potentially increasing costs and weakening efforts to standardize future military systems across Europe.

The decision also highlights the challenges of managing large multinational defence projects, where political objectives often collide with industrial rivalries, national interests, and disagreements over intellectual property and control.
