LAX announces July road closures for pedestrian bridge project

Temporary lane restrictions and road closures will begin next month on Sepulveda Boulevard near LAX to accommodate construction of a new pedestrian bridge.
The closures are part of the Airfield and Terminal Modernization Program Roadway Improvements Project, which includes a pedestrian bridge spanning Sepulveda Boulevard at Century Boulevard, according to Los Angeles World Airports.
“The ATMP Roadway Improvements project is one of the most ambitious transportation projects in our city,” Mike Christensen, chief airports development officer for Los Angeles World Airports, said in a statement.
“These temporary road closures on Sepulveda Boulevard will help us deliver a new pedestrian bridge that provides access to LAX while reducing vehicle traffic congestion and increasing pedestrian safety,” he added.
The first major construction period is scheduled for July 13-17 and will involve intermittent nightly traffic breaks on southbound Sepulveda Boulevard between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Officials said traffic could be stopped for up to 20 minutes at a time between midnight and 4 a.m. while crews install support beams for the bridge structure. Up to four southbound lanes may be closed during the work.
A second construction phase is scheduled to begin at 1 a.m. July 18 and will require a full closure of northbound Sepulveda Boulevard between Century Boulevard and 98th Street. The closure is expected to remain in place until 4:30 a.m. July 19.
Motorists were advised to allow extra travel time and use alternate routes during the construction periods. Los Angeles Department of Transportation traffic officers and flaggers will be deployed along detour routes to help manage traffic flow.   
LAX travelers were encouraged to continue arriving at the airport at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights.
Airport officials noted that both construction periods were scheduled after the final World Cup quarterfinal match at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on July 10.
Los Angeles World Airports also launched a website providing information about roadway construction associated with the project at https://www.lawa.org/transforminglax/projects/atmp-roadways/roadway-impacts.   
According to airport officials, the roadway project will reconfigure 4.4 miles of roads around LAX to separate airport-bound traffic from neighborhood traffic, reduce congestion and improve access to the airport and
surrounding communities.   
Officials said additional intermittent closures are expected as construction continues through 2030.
