Understanding Impatience: Expression, Recognition, and Behavioral Cues

Impatience is commonly experienced in everyday life, yet little is known about how it is expressed or recognized. Emotion researchers have historically focused on basic emotions with universal facial expressions, but emotions like impatience are more context-dependent and lack a clearly defined expressive profile. This research aimed to address this gap by identifying the behavioral markers of impatience and assessing whether they are reliably recognized by others. This work explored how impatience is conveyed through facial, vocal, and bodily cues across three studies. Study 1 used a naturalistic induction to elicit impatience in a waiting context, capturing spontaneous expressions. Study 2 examined how individuals express impatience when prompted, with the goal of further elucidating behavioral patterns associated with impatience.
