MAX VERSTAPPEN HAS WON THE MIAMI GRAND PRIX

He's the first driver to win from ninth on the grid since Niki Lauda in the 1984 French Grand Prix and only the fifth driver to win from that spot in Formula One history.

Verstappen has also won the last three Grands Prix in the United States - the points he'll earn this race will further his lead atop the drivers standings.

Teammate Perez crosses the line in P2 whilst Fernando Alonso will reach the podium again in P3.

21:48

Lap 48: Verstappen re-takes the lead on the main straight

Perez looked to be a sitting duck on the back straight, but the Mexican Minister of Defense made an amazing effort to keep his place.

He looked to do the same on the main straight, but Verstappen was able to keep the advantage into the first turn and took back the lead.

21:45

Lap 47: Verstappen will have DRS down the straights

The new tires have given the Dutchman excellent grip as the race enters the final ten laps

Red_Bull_Racing.png

21:44

Lap 46: Verstappen finally pits, the last driver to do so and loses position to Perez

The Red Bull driver kept his stint going as long as he could in order to not lose position to his teammate, but he's not able to.

Race is now on.

Lap 34: Hulkenberg heads into the pitlane

Drivers that started on the hard tires are now starting to head into the pits to swap for mediums.

Lap 20: It's only a matter of time for Verstappen to overtake his teammate

Perez has mentioned that he has struggled with his front right tire and he is running on the medium compounds as Verstappen continues with the hards.

The Mexican driver will likely soon need to swap for his hard compounds - which will likely mean Verstappen moves past him

21:01

Lap 18: Medium tire runners are now switching over to hards

Russell and Leclerc have both changed their tires for the race

It's lights out and away we go!

We're underway here from the Miami International Autodrome in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Right off the start, we have contact at the back as Fernando Alonso weaves and winds his way around Carlos Sainz, but can't get past pole winner Sergio Perez

20:27

Things to watch for: Straightaway takeovers, wind causing spins, and close quarters

The track doesn't owe itself to a lot of overtaking opportunities, so expect the drivers to use that long straightaway out of turn 16 as their biggest chance to improve their position.

Wind has seemed to effect every driver this week - with complaints about the gusts coming through in both practice and qualifying. With stronger winds today, that could lead to wrecks - and considering how skinny the road is, we could see a red flag.

Finally, the winding complex of turns between 4-8 and the skinny road for turns 11-15 will keep the racing close, but will make passing hard to come by.

LL Cool J is introducing the drivers

Well, it's certainly an American twist on this race.

A Will.I.Am song specifically composed for this event is being played as drivers are given individual introductions by the rap legend LL Cool J

Max Verstappen will have some work to do to start this race

The reigning world champion and points leaders starts P9 today.

He won last year's Miami GP, so it's likely that he can find a way to get to the front quickly.

19:44

Rain is questionable, but the wind is definitely present

There's about a five percent chance of rain in the forecast but wind gusts will be a big factor in the race.

Currently the wind is blowing at about 18mph (28.9kph) and that could send cars flying off the track.

That quintessential Miami Latin flair has arrived in the paddock

A pair of Colombians have made their way to the garage as Urbano artist Maluma and Reggaeton musician J Balvin have been spotted

19:19

It's another jersey swap for the Red Bulls and an NFL quarterback

Patrick Mahomes gave Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez signed jerseys, while the drivers returned the favor with some of their own merch.

Earlier this week, Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa swapped jerseys with Verstappen.

The clouds are overhead as the pilots parade gets underway

Whether or not the rain will fall during the race remains to be seen

icon_flag_unitedStates.png

18:53

Spots of rain are falling in the stadium paddock

DailyMail.com's F1 reporter Jonathan McEvoy says there's a bit of a drizzle around the track - which did not experience rain during the race last year.

According to Weather.com, there's a chance of rain in the Miami Gardens area likely - beginning around 2:15pm local time - just an hour and 15 minutes prior to race time.
