Masters of the Universe is out today and looks great on the screen. Graphic and computer work now in 2026, but could have been Iceland, Italy, more. Roger Dean-style looking landscapes populate this sword and sorcery story with lasers and spaceships.

There are only so many movies in this purely 1980s genre of movie. Albert Pyun’s Sword and the Sorcerer was the first, the two Conan movies, Red Sonja, the Deathstalker series, the Fire and Ice cartoon, the Ator and Beastmaster series, a few more. Krull. Highlander. Lou Ferrigno’s Hercules movies, and finally 1987s Masters of the Universe.

The 1987 movie was the first real live action movie from a cartoon. For kids born of the later 70s and early 80s – this 1987 Masters of the Universe was build up and culmination from both the GI Joe and Transformers cartoon movies.

While Masters of the Universe 1987 started with less backstory and right into the action, here now in 2026’s there is a slight more Jedi knight, world building, almost Arthurian knights training to set up the backstory of Prince Adam. Man at Arms and King Randor are really the first old school characters out of the gate here – and this really is the beginning of a Conan/Superman type of story for Adam.

Ten minutes in – the origin story of Prince Adam is really Pyun’s Sword and the Sorcerer in that modern laser firing Krull setting. Then your conclave of bad characters – most being seen on screen for the first time beyond animation, is an immediate mix of original early 1980s Filmation cartoon characters, and from the 1987 film.

These are your tools and colors of paint. The humor of the villains continues here – Skeletor (like Frank Langella in the 1987 film), is the best performance of the bunch.

Twenty-minutes into the movie we are on present day earth with a self-aware Adam on present day Earth, looking for the sword. This self-aware concept for Adam is brilliant: put him in a different time and place – without the bad guys.

A great original Masters movie cameo early on, and then a short search for the lost Power Sword (lost for 15 years but wrapped up in 15 minutes). Much like Highlander 2, complete with the namecheck reference, the world Eternia jumps back to present here and now Earth just in time for them to save Adam, and to find his lost sword. Then it is back to Eternia – home planet of He-Man and all the Masters of the Universe.

An hour into the movie is the first on screen film transformation of Prince Adam into He-Man – the 40 plus years of the character. Universal Studios did it live in person with a two-actor switch for years in the Conan live action spectacular in Hollywood. The fan service in Masters of the Universe is all in- or at least at 90/95 percent. They didn’t leave too much unturned.

Speaking of Highlander – a couple of the strangest Queen needle drops out of another sci fi fantasy film here in the soundtrack in the film – with the absurdity of the cartoon plot kicking in. Shoulda been Flash Gordon. Much like the original 1987 film, the final showdown between He-Man and Skeletor is one-sided. It’s He-Man – the most powerful man/person in the Universe.

There are no less than three post credit scenes, one echoing the first Masters of the Universe film ending, one bringing back another cartoon character and one indeed echoing Albert Pyun’s last lines of the canceled 1987 sequel to the original film.

Masters of the Universe opens on Earth Friday.
