A psychological thriller set in the cycling world, starring two acclaimed movie stars and directed by a filmmaker coming off a high-profile streaming hit, has been snapped up in an eight-figure deal.

Amazon has paid just over $20 million for the international rights to Pumping Black, the Mimi Cave-directed thriller starring Jonathan Bailey and Natalie Portman, according to Deadline. Cave is working from a screenplay by Haley Hope Bartels. Anton is fully financing the project, and Portman's production company, MountainA, is on board as a producer. Filming is scheduled to begin in autumn 2026.

Bailey plays Taylor Mace, a 35-year-old professional cyclist staring down the end of his career as the Tour de France approaches, while Portman is Andrea Lathe, a power-hungry doctor whose influence pushes Mace into increasingly compromising territory. There have already been comparisons drawn to Whiplash and Black Swan, which feel like fair shorthand for what Cave does with intense subcultures and unraveling protagonists.

For Cave, this is her second high-profile Amazon project in quick succession. Her 2025 Prime Video mystery thriller, Holland, starring Nicole Kidman, established a working relationship with the studio. Pumping Black now extends it into big-budget, dual-star territory. Her 2022 debut, Fresh, made her one of the more closely watched genre directors of the past few years, partly because of her instinct for dressing such grim material in a glossy, dissonant package.

Bailey is on a run in which every project he becomes attached to turns into a talking point. He anchored Jurassic World Rebirth last summer opposite Scarlett Johansson, followed by Wicked: For Good over Christmas, while his previous TV work includes Fellow Travelers and Netflix's Bridgerton. A grittier, less polished role could be welcome, and Pumping Black sounds like it could be a deliberate step away from the costume-drama charm.

Meanwhile, Portman's role as Andrea Lathe sits closer to her Black Swan territory than anything she's done in a while, and the fact that MountainA is producing suggests this is a project she's actively shaped rather than just signed onto. Portman has been moving in this direction recently, with May December and the recent The Gallerist opposite Jenna Ortega seeing her lean into morally slippery women.

Amazon has been pushing tentpole spectacles straight to Prime Video lately, with the live-action Voltron skipping cinemas being the most recent example. A $20 million+ adult prestige thriller fits the other half of that strategy pretty well. With Cannes barely underway, the bidding floor has just been set.
