It’s a bit ironic that one of the week’s top stories was one about Republicans growing tired of Trump.
The Conversation is a weekly dive into the most popular stories on Daily Kos and what it tells us about the national political environment.
It’s a bit ironic that one of the week’s top stories was this one:
It’s ironic because Daily Kos stories headlining President Donald Trump performed like crap this week. That’s unusual. If Trump is good at one thing, it’s generating headlines, and Daily Kos readers love to hate on him.
And yet this week, for perhaps the first time, site readers were (mostly) like, BASTA.
It’s obviously impossible to talk about American politics without talking about Trump, and he is adjacent or prominent in many of this week’s top stories. But did he say crazy stuff at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner? Of course he did. Did people want to click on those stories and read about them? Not so much.
Instead, readers responded to stories about the effects of Trump on our body politic—from the corruption of our discourse, to the dangers of his administration, to the absurdness of the culture wars.
That doesn’t mean Trump didn’t have his breakout moments. His eulogy for former Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina certainly raised eyebrows. And a press conference aboard Air Force One was nearly incoherent—which, come to think of it, is the new normal in this crazy world of ours.
But more and more, readers are tuning into the midterm elections. My own story on the GOP’s desperate efforts to spin away their terrible Big Beautiful Bill made the list,
And sure, it’s too early to talk about 2028 … but we can walk and chew gum at the same time, can’t we?
Talking about the midterms and 2028 are far more fun than talking about Trump, aren’t they? And there’s a reason for that. The midterms will finally put a check on his dictatorial ambitions, and the 2028 presidential election will mean that—for the first time in over a decade—we can go about our daily days without thinking about that A-hole again.
And won’t that be beautiful?
We continue to be paywall-free. We continue to be supported by our readers, not billionaires or corporations. But we need to bring in more revenue. We are leaning on our community more than ever to help make ends meet.
