UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — During summer commencement weekend, Penn State made history by awarding its one millionth degree. To honor this milestone — and to build new momentum as the institution looks to the future — Penn State alumni, families, friends and fans are challenged to collectively make one million gifts. Counting began on commencement day — Aug. 15 — and will run through the close of the University’s next comprehensive fundraising campaign.
The awarding of the institution’s millionth degree recognizes a total that includes associate, bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, MD/DO and JD degrees.
“This moment celebrates a far-reaching history of more than 916,000 Penn State alumni — and an impressive living legacy upheld by those who represent the current alumni network 800,000 strong,” said Reggie Bustinza, CEO of the Penn State Alumni Association. “These individuals’ ideas, leadership and generosity continue to shape communities and industries around the world and advance what can be accomplished right here at Penn State.”
Participants in the call to raise one million gifts can become “one in a million” by making a contribution of any size to any area of the University. Gifts made through the event page will be directed to The Penn State Fund, which supports unexpected and often urgent needs across every college and campus at the University. The fund is regularly fueled by gifts from Penn State alumni and friends, and achieving one million contributions would provide a record-setting volume of participation and tremendous support for one of the University’s most powerful student support resources. “When I think about the roar of gameday, the hush of a lecture hall, the familiar shout of ‘We Are Penn State’ heard anywhere around the world — it’s clear that this University is shaped by the limitless pride and passion of our community,” said Jay E. Davenport, vice president for Development and Alumni Relations. “We’ve arrived at this distinctive moment because millions of people continue to believe in Penn State. I can’t wait to see how far our community’s collective generosity can propel us into the future.”
Donors who contribute to the effort to raise one million gifts advance the University’s historic land-grant mission to serve and lead. Through philanthropy, alumni and friends are helping students to join the Penn State family and prepare for lifelong success; driving research, outreach and economic development that grow our shared strength and readiness for the future; and increasing the University’s impact for families, patients and communities across the commonwealth and around the world.
