Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) will join JSTOR Digital Stewardship Services as a Tier 2 participant, with plans to migrate its digital collections from CONTENTdm into JSTOR’s integrated, preservation-ready platform.

With Tier 2 access, MTSU will gain digital asset management with flexible cataloging tools, OAIS-compliant preservation via Portico, and pathways for research integration and discovery through sharing collections on JSTOR. To support their move from CONTENTdm, MTSU will work with JSTOR’s professional migration services team to transition over 13,000 items  from the James E. Walker Library and the Albert Gore Research Center collections. Materials slated for relocation include regional history and community documentation, historic garments and textiles used in teaching, and archival projects focused on military service, civil rights, and campus activism.

The transition will simplify workflows for librarians and archivists, reduce dependence on legacy systems, and increase the visibility of distinctive collections by situating them within a sustainable environment that connects directly to the broader JSTOR research platform.

“Moving into JSTOR Stewardship will let us manage, preserve, and share collections from multiple university entities in a single environment, and ultimately make them much easier for our students, faculty, and community partners to discover and use,” said Kathleen Schmand, Dean, James E. Walker Library at MTSU.

“The team at MTSU has been very thoughtful about what it means to move to a new platform for their digital collections,” said Jess Clemons, Director of Business Development, JSTOR Stewardship. “Tier 2 gives them an integrated home for their collections today, and a clear path to expand access and impact for more materials over time.”

Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) is a public research university founded in 1911. Located in Murfreesboro, TN and with an enrollment of more than 20,000 students and 300+ majors and concentrations, MTSU is the No. 1 producer of graduates for the Greater Nashville economy.
