World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has fallen outside of the top 50 highest-paid athletes in the world after only fighting once in the last 12 months.

After beating Dillian Whyte at Wembley last April, Fury announced that he intended to retire from boxing and spent eight months away from the ring before opting to return to take on Derek Chisora for a third time in December.

Fury delivered a one-sided beatdown before stopping his old rival in the 10th round, but he has not fought since after talks over an undisputed clash with Oleksandr Usyk collapsed.

The Gypsy King was 14th on Forbes' rich list last year following wins over Deontay Wilder and Whyte, but his inactivity over the past 12 months has cost him and he is no longer inside the top 50 athletes after they released their 2023 list on Tuesday, which tracked earnings from May 1, 2022 to May 1, 2023.

Fury's slump in the rankings is likely to be a bitter blow for the 34-year-old, with his heavyweight rival Anthony Joshua up in 28th place having earned $53m (£42.5m) in the last year.

Tyson Fury (L) and Gareth Bale (R) are no longer among the top 50 highest-paid athletes, according to Forbes

Joshua has fought twice during this period, losing to Usyk in their rematch in Saudi Arabia last August before getting back to winning ways by outpointing Jermaine Franklin in April.

Fury is not the only high-profile athlete to drop down the lucrative list.

Welsh superstar Gareth Bale is also not in the top 50 anymore following his retirement from football.

Bale was 30th at this time last year, but he then left Real Madrid to join LAFC in July.

The former Tottenham forward then led his country at the World Cup in Qatar, but after Wales failed to make it beyond the group stage he called time on his illustrious career in January.

Jake Paul is another high-profile athlete to drop out of the top 50 over the past 12 months

Despite Wrexham's Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney trying to tempt him out of retirement to play for their team in League Two next season, Bale has insisted he has no intention of making a comeback.

YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul was also on the list in 2022, coming in at 45th after consecutive wins over ex-UFC champion Tyron Woodley.

He has since beaten MMA legend Anderson Silva before losing his unbeaten record to Tommy Fury, Tyson's brother, in February.

Despite fighting twice in PPV bouts, Paul does not make the top 50 this year.

He does not appear to have been disheartened after his loss, though, and is set to face Nate Diaz inside the ring on August 5
