The NYPD says security will be tight again for Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden.

As the Knicks look to get back in the win column, fans can expect security restrictions and screenings around the Garden similar to the ones that were in place Monday night.

“Don't see why it's necessary for Game 4. We didn't do it for Game 1 and 2. So I don't know. I think it's silly,” said Knicks fan Tim Chung.

Beginning at 4 p.m. there will be a security zone established around the arena stretching from Sixth Avenue over to Eighth Avenue from 29th Street north to 35th Street. Seventh Avenue will be closed to vehicle and general pedestrian traffic.

Eighth Avenue will remain open, but is subject to closures if conditions warrant.

Just like on Monday night, NYPD officials say no one will be allowed in the zone, unless they have a purpose to be there, like a ticket to the game or watch party, a train leaving from Penn Station, patronizing a bar restaurant or some other authorized reason.

Everyone entering the zone will be screened at designated entry points along Sixth and Eighth avenues, similar to the protocols in place on New Year’s Eve.

“It sucks because it would be nice, you know, when it was Game 1, Game 2 and everyone was here. But I guess with everything that's going on and what they saw in Game 3, they just have to do it for safety reasons. I guess they don't want people getting hurt. So I understand it from that point,” explained Ryan Scott.

The watch party on Plaza 33 will return for Game 4 tonight.

One thousand fans will be permitted to watch the game outside the Garden, as long as they have a ticket.

What will not be allowed is the congregating of fans outside the Garden after the game.

These limitations come after some fans became violent and destructive outside of the official watch party at Bryant Park on Monday night.

Ultimately, 21 people were taken into custody and arrested, eight of whom are facing charges that include assaulting an officer, criminal possession of a weapon, menancing and resisting arrest.

"It's sad that the fans react a certain way,” said Yolanda White. “Of course, a loss is hard. You know, you want your team to win, but that doesn't mean we have to react in a negative way. The security measures, I mean, is bad for the people traveling home from work, is bad for the businesses that weren't able to get the fan base to come in and spend their money."

"I understand that it is necessary. But, you know, we could give a little leeway because we're excited and we want our team to win," White added.

The Madison Square Garden Sports Corporation issued a statement on the security measures for Game 4, saying in part: "These celebrations are part of the heart and soul of New Yorkers. The actions of the Mayor and Police Commissioner, supposedly in support of the Knicks and their fans, are difficult to understand. We urge them to lift these restrictions and embrace the love of the team.”

According to the NYPD, Madison Square Garden's permit application for the watch party was for 500 to 1,000 attendees.

The NYPD says they granted access for the maximum number of attendees requested for the watch party.

Everyone attending the watch party is required to enter at the Sixth Avenue and 33rd Street access point.
