Fans spilled into the streets and blocked traffic, with police saying their actions escalated into "reckless and dangerous behavior."
Dozens of people were taken into custody Wednesday night after large crowds celebrating the Knicks’ Game 4 win turned chaotic near Madison Square Garden, the NYPD said.
Police said crowds began forming between Fifth and Eighth avenues north of the Garden as the game progressed, eventually growing to an estimated 10,000 people.
Fans spilled into the streets and blocked traffic, with police saying their actions escalated into “reckless and dangerous behavior.”
The NYPD said fans climbed on top of moving vehicles, scaffolding, light poles and traffic signals, and in at least one case, attempted to flip a taxi.
Members of the crowd also ignited rounds of fireworks, threw glass bottles at others, got into fights and climbed onto NYPD vehicles, damaging at least four of them, according to police.
Fifty-six people were ultimately taken into custody, 15 of whom were arrested and 41 of whom were released with criminal court summonses, the NYPD said.
Charges included assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstruction of governmental administration and trademark counterfeiting, police said.
The NYPD said 10 of its members were injured, including one who was struck in the head with a glass bottle.
“This is an exciting time for the Knicks and for fans across New York City,” the department said in a statement. “The NYPD wants New Yorkers to be able to enjoy these celebrations, but our primary responsibility is to ensure that everyone can do so safely.”
The celebrations came after the Knicks made a record comeback from 29 points down to defeat the Spurs 107-106, taking a 3-1 series lead.
On Monday, police took nearly two dozen people into custody outside a Knicks watch party at Bryant Park.
