Police say 63 people were arrested and 10 officers were injured.
Outside Madison Square Garden on Monday, fans were still soaking in a championship decades in the making.
“It still hasn’t sunk in yet,” Brooklyn resident Yusef Lewis said.
The Knicks’ first title since 1973 sparked celebrations across the city, from living rooms and bars to streets packed shoulder-to-shoulder after the final buzzer.
In Midtown alone, police estimate crowds swelled to the thousands, overtaking streets around the Garden and Times Square.
“There were thousands, millions, billions of people, like too many people. And they were all screaming,” Long Island resident Annie Cronim said.
“We opened our windows and you could just hear the roar of the city,” Queens resident Lily Martinez said.
But by the end of the night, police say some celebrations had turned destructive.
“A majority of them were fans, but you get rabble rousers from the social media stuff and they’re there to just cause trouble,” Long Island resident Tommy Onolfo said.
“There were seven shootings connected to Knicks-related celebrations across the city, along with assaults, vandalism, fires, stabbings,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.
As the city prepares for Thursday’s ticker-tape parade, officials are also accounting for the fallout from championship night.
“There were a select number of New Yorkers who celebrated in a way that frankly was unacceptable,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.
Police say 63 people were arrested and 10 officers injured. A 17-year-old was shot in Times Square. Officers recovered at least one gun.
“I thought it was a little crazy, but that’s the passion that we have here for the Knicks,” Cincinnati resident Chavor Humbert said.
“People need to know how to enjoy the excitement and the moment without tearing up things,” New Jersey resident James Robinson said.
Still, officials and fans alike say those incidents don’t tell the full story of the city that waited more than half a century for this moment.
“I think on the whole, really what you saw was a lot of really positive celebration in the city,” Queens resident Nicole Martinez said.
