I always enjoy a side trip to Nara, which is not far from Kyoto. See the temples, and hang out with the tame and friendly deer in Nara Park.

For me the things that made the trip much easier were google fi (for reliable mobile data), google maps, google translate and transit passes.

I just got back from Japan, and yes, the heat was brutal. I found YouTube channel KenshoQuest to be helpful to prepare. Also, I did see a lot people wearing the jackets that have built-in fans, so you don't necessarily have to feel silly about wearing one.
